It is time summarize what happened during the summer 2006. There was no major changes done to the car, but of course some small modifications were done... the description about them follows.
I was not satisfied with the results from the drag race, at the end of the summer 2005. However, I had a new opportunity when a test day was held in Vaasa, by local American Car Club, "Sunrise Cruisers". The weather was cold and windy. After some practise, I got 14.88 s ET and 160.24 kph (100.15 MPH) trap speed. I think it was quite ok, for a front-wheel drive car, not buit for drag race purposes.
Before the happening I built a rev limiter / launch control unit. in fact, the controller includes two rev limiters. The one with lower rev limit can be activated by pressing a button that is located in the steering wheel. With that and some throttle, a few PSI of boost pressure can be built up before take-off.
GFF track day at Ahvenisto, Hämeenlinna, was also visited. Some videos can be found from here. The car was otherwise OK, but again there were problems with the brakes. They overheated, and I almost crashed the car because of that. Anyway, the day was very entertaining, although I couldn't drive when they started to measure lap times, because of the missing brakes.
Another track day was organized by LCF in Botniaring, Jurva. Video camera was again on board, some videos are shown here. I got 257mm ventilated brakes from Fiat Bravo, but I made a severe mistake when I didn't update the pads. The pads proved having inferior quality, and I ended up having worse brakes than before! Some aftermarket pads seem to be dangerously bad. 5 brakings were enough for brakes of this size, and the car only weighs 700 kilograms...
I put the original brakes back, because I wanted to participate some drag races again, and I only had 13" slicks. The first happening was a test night in Kauhajoki. The ET or trap speed didn't improve, but the night was an entertaining experience.
A friend of mine dared me to attend a drag race in Vaasa. The race was the last one ever held in that place, so there was plenty of drivers and audience. Despite of that, I got a few drive turns. On very hot weather, I got 14.3s ET and 167 (104.4 MPH) kph trap speed, with 1.4 bar (20.3 PSI) boost.
Some videos from both happenings can be found from here.
At the end of the summer, I started building some wiring loom for fuel injection. I have been playing with my own version of Megasuirt, and I have been thinking about updating the fuel system for a long time. The sensors are already installed in the car, but the vehicle was kept driveable all the time.
When the autumn come, it was nice to drive fully functional car into the garage again. Time will show, whether I have some time to make some modifications to the car.. at least, the injection system would be nice...
